Messages for July 1-15, 2008

data/tech savvy folks: IF i have an Access DB or Excel list of a ton of email addresses, which do NOT exist in my Outlook address book... is there a way I can import them all ~not so much as contacts~ but as ONE ""distribution list/group"" that I can later select and send a bulk mailing too?? help would be great!!!

Was the credit card company able to "backcharge" the company?

So.... I came home from vacation a few years ago and was going through the mail and opened the cc bill. There were all these charges for phone sex numbers and horoscope numbers, etc. I was like WTF?!??! Next to the charges was the phone number that was used to call them. So I called the number and it had been disconnected. I next called the phone company and explained my situation. I gave them the number and they came up with a name and an address........... which they refused to give me. I got pretty frustrated with them but understood why they couldn't give me the info. I said I would take it to the police and they would get a warrant and get the info. Oh yea..... I also called my cc company and disputed the charges and they were taken off the bill. So I go to the cops, give them the story, the bill with the phone number and tell them all they need to do is get a warrant and go to the phone company and they look at me like I'm crazy. Long story short, nothing was done, no one was found (even though the phone company had all the info necessary to start building a case, and I still don't know who took my cc number and from where. We did our own little investigation and we think it was from a store at the local mall but once again, it couldn't be confirmed because the cops did nothing. Funniest part was the look my wife gave me when I showed her the charges on the bill. I looked back at her and was like, "Are you f'n kidding me?!?!?"

Sweens - not sure about banks being the biggest source. They are certainly the most reported on, due to their size. But my understanding is old-fashioned paper is still the number one method for identity theft... credit card offers in the mail that aren't shredded, etc, etc. I don't like restaurants simply because of potential lack of care of wait staff. They might collect a few meal checks and sit CCs on the bar for customers etc. Don't necessarily mean the owners are criminals, but I don't like my CC leaving my hands. Noone will care for your CC like you will.

i've had cc info stolen on vacation. coulda been a restaurant or hotel or the car place. it wouldnt be tough for someone with a good memory since they already know your billing address for a hotel or cah. i'd just not use a debit card so your not out the loot while you dispute stuff.

Ive paid with credit cards ONLY for dining/drinking out for over 30 years and no one has stolen my info yet. Dont make every restaurant out to be a thief plus you can always contest the credit card charges. Of course identity theft is on the rise but usually its some bank thats let their customers data get in the wrong hands. REALIZE we are moving to a cashless society.

the Number 1 place for theft of credit card info is restaurants. Should be the one place you pay cash, no matter where you are.

you know, as usual, if this wasn't splattered all over the TV NON-STOP... how many people do you think would have even noticed besides the New Yorker readers? -- who I ~presume~ are intelligent enough to "get it". That being said, it was a careless choice of a cover, IMHO.... simply because of the spin factor.

i think the NY is spot on, is showing us *exactly* the bigotry that some of this country is thinking, or in case of Fox, being implied or even directly stated. It's not the 1950s anymore, but we've obviously got a ways to go. the color of a person's skin, should be no more important than the color of their eyes.

Saw Scottie and Mike this weekend at the All Good Festival in WV. They had a 4:20pm slot. It was great to see/hear Scott tear it up. What a class act. The band was overall good. Phil's set was tremendous. Jimmy Herring cooked....seriously. Derek came out with WSP and ripped. Good time had by all. Weather was perfect. Next trip is to upstate NY. See you all there.

valchy, my hero! i was lamenting the lost hat, the only cap i've ever liked or worn. that baseball cap was just like a baseball cap to me. i had a baseball cap jones a baseball cap jones a baseball cap jones so baby oooooh ooooh. and very timely on that iced tea! thanks HB for the hospitality and it was sure good to see a dozen or show max creek folks in rochester. what a nice venue, a city park with a nice gentle slope down to the stage. stretchy & smiles, you were missed, safe travels home. while it was a fun weekend, we lost a good one on saturday, legendary yankee bobby murcer died at the age of 62. he was a hell of a ballplayer during some of the yankees darkest days, and while not a hall of fame player he was a hall of fame guy. when he came back to the yankees in 1979, i was working in ft lauderdale parking cars at bobby rubino's place for ribs. the yankees used to have their spring training site in ft lauderdale. rubino's was a popular place for the players. bobby and goose gossage were fast friends and easily the nicest players who came in. bobby always had a nice word for everyone, was always smiling and laughing, just a hell of a good guy. and he always gave a $20 tip to whoever parked his car. he went straight from playing to the broadcast booth, and his storied, anticdotes and insighs into the game were treasured. i loved bobby murcer, and i salute you up in heaven!

Holy Moly-----Creek on a Wednesday....i feel all giddy like ita 1988 and I couldn't sleep to well on Tuesday..and Wed morning/afternoon felt like it was 3 days long. Then I would get to the bubble and grab a baloon as I walked up those steps....and I would see that hot waitress with the tray high above her head moving through the crowd...trying to get by Tommy so he wouldn't spill the tray...while Jay Friedes was passing out Taroyt reading cards..and I would go to the alley and see karate man spinnin out..and...and...and....Get Back

What a great week of music...the only thing missing was a creek show but that is just around the corner...CAMP CREEK.. Tues was WSP some old school tunes, Herring ripped it up no noodlin going on just straight up shreddin'. Thursday night Steely Dan, not as powerful as the 95' buff show but solid. Last night was phil and in my opinion one of the best outta him I have seen. Next weekend the Dam show with RMB, Buddahood and the hacken saw boys. Summer gotta love it. It's not so bad being sober either...I can recall setlists.hahah Can't wait to tell a few of you the BIG news. See you at Camp..

Great time at Phil last night. Thank you to all the Creek fans I saw that made the night that much more special. Most impressed by the energy and vibe Levon Helm gave to the crowd. Best ground scrore of the night (after a late taper tear down) happened to be a sky blue baseball hat with a pink umbrella on it left behind by sk. Should I marker in GO SOX on the back of it before returning?

I'm with Christine, Mark, Brett and Josh B. sounded great last night, and it could not have been more beautiful outside. So we found out last night that Bob Gosselin is the Police Dispatcher right here in the town of Agawam. Also, heard a story about x driving through the front of a 7-11. Great song selection, they played(in no particular order), the weight, me and my uncle, season of the witch, come on in my kitchen, can't find my way home, boogie on reggae woman, thank you falletinme, women are smarter, you write the book (sweet),scarlet begonias, 2 neil young songs, The Dukes of hazard theme(While the cops were there, lol), The jeffersons theme and more stuff that I don't recall. I had a blast and I think everyone else did to. Thanks to the folks that came out, you are all the best.

Ok long-winded here I am, so forgive me. SK - was ready to throw that one out there. Not sure who originated that quote but it's a good one and I have to agree. In theory, Communism is a great idea. We all work and share fruits of labor equally (minus Communist party corruption). Problem is when there is no incentive to achieve, nothing gets achieved. So theory goes out the window and in reality it sucks. Capitalism? Man works great and is the best system we have invented to this point. But, like all systems there are downsides. And I have to wonder if the downside of Capitalism is the greatest threat to this nation - more than terrorism? the economy? anything? I'm all ears on that one. At the beginning of this nation, we were all equals.. over time.. the smart, healthy, educated, fortunate, etc. did a better job of growing their wealth than others. Generations pass and the gap between have and have nots grows wider and wider. To the point we are today where it grows exponentially faster. How do you stop it? I'm not sure it can be stopped and this is why Presidential candidates don't talk substantively about it. Welfare surely isn't the answer, for when you throw money at a problem, the problem just grows. Lower taxes for the poor?...I have news for you.. they don't pay ANY. Did you know that as an aggregate, due to the Earned IncomeTax cedit, that the bottom 40% of all people in this country receive MORE money from the Income Tax system than they put in. You could completely eliminate ALL income taxes for the bottom half of the country and you wouldn't affect the Treasury one single bit. The top 10% pay 70% of all bills. The next 40% pay the remaining 30%. This gap and the risk of social unrest that could follow, I believe, may be the biggest danger to this nation. How do you fix it? If you figure that one out, you are a much smarter man than me. Some economists have theorized (we know how useful these can be) that if you took all the money in the country and divied it up equally..in 10 years we would be right back to where we are. Have, Havenot. If you want to affect an economy with tax cuts, you have to include the rich, cause they are the only ones that can affect it. We must figure out how to close the earning gap between the top and the bottom. Again, if you figure that one out, you are a much smarter man than me. WOW am I sounded pessimistic? lol... nah, just an observation.

That's one reason... oil speculation is another, and the weak dollar is a third. There is a lot of argument how much each reason contributes. No one really knows. As for the Iraq War, I made no comment about the wisdom of the war, or how its been waged; I just stated a simple economic fact.

SK it's not just the Tax rate it's the ROI. With Bush I am paying 4% less than I would under Clinton (Still paying close to 33% tho) However just about all of the tax revenue for the last few years had been frittered away on fake wars and to top it of under Bush the minimal tax breaks came because of massive borrowing from other countries. So no matter who gets in office next they will have 10 trillion in foreign debt that was not there under Clinton.

Ed.. hope I'm not coming across harsh.. just trying to help understand that we can not predict the future to precise moments in time, but in the long run we should be optimistic about our futures. Ed - SK has the answer it's called "dollar cost averaging", but those in it for the long haul should never be scared of dips in the market. It may go lower still, it may remain flat it may go up. Remember October 1987? Anyone who tells you which direction or by how much and when is a liar. Look ino Warren Buffet, he's loving these times. The lower the price, the more opportunities out there. BUT I am confident that in the long run, it will go up. If you don't think so.. then you are betting BIG TIME against America. I'm learning that Hippies are such pessimists.

The weak dollar certainly helps American industry sell their wares abroad; in fact today's report shows exports way up. It also helps the oil industry, whose profits are directly related to the price of oil, which goes higher as the dollar drops.

I heard an interesting report on npr a couple weeks ago. Apparently the deflated us dollar has prompted foreign companies to begin building manufacturing plants here. Bmw and Seinhieser(microphones)were named as examples. I also heard on the same network that the american co.Catapiller or International(I forget) is doing record business because of growing need for infrastructure in countries like China and Brazil. The worlds economy is exploding and America surely will benefit from that. Frankly I'm surprised that such obviously intelligent people on this site are displaying such a short sighted lack of vision. People have a tendency to look for evidence of what they want to believe, myself included. I don't understand why anyone in this country would seemingly want the US economy to collapse. It kind of comes off as though it were motivated by nationalistic self loathing and I'm not even patriotic. Tough times to be sure but the game is far from over and at least in my mind all hope is not lost. It would be refreshing if you guys could be a little less relentlessly pessimistic. It doesn't help matters any and it's kind of a downer. Sorry to post and run but I'm gonna go put in some ot to help me and the company I work for through this difficult time.

I wouldn't even look for a bottom until the financial news improves, and there's no signs that that will happen; indeed both the housing/mortgage crisis and the value of dollar/price of oil crisis are going to continue to worsen.

I'll be in line for bread? No doubt, its unpredictable for sure... we've seen the reset button hit before. as SK will surely attest, the higher the possible risk, the higher the possible return, and vice versa; and past performance is no guarantee of future results; fits the micro and macro views.

Wavy is right. The market might go a little lower, but the yield curve, which never lies says it’s a buyers market now. Especially 401(k)’s, if you had your money in a conservative investment, now is the time to transfer it out to a more aggressive fund. And since 401(k)’s are invested weekly or every other week, that is called dollar cost averaging, which over the course of a career will always prove to be better than the fixed account.

It's becoming more likely that the Federal Government will have to rescue Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, which will effectively double the national debt, which will cause the dollar to fall a lot more, which will make oil even more expensive. Sounds like fun.
