My capture software, as well as the others that I know of, capture analog signals only. They capture the Mac's audio. If I import digital, the computer changes that to analog for the speakers, then captures that, re-digitizing it for the hard drive.

Ethanol is a horrible alternative presently when we have other sources for energy or fuel..that wouldn't take from our food resources which would boost costs in various categories..nevermind that it's not cost effective..Hydrogen can be so much more effective being that it's one of the most abundant gases in the world..or biofuels that can be recycled and used again..food to fuel

Basically, you need a sound card that has a digital s/pdif in .. then you go digital out of a dat deck in to the computer. you might need to change the settings in whatever you use to record to use the digital input instead of the analog one.. also DATs can be recorded at either 44.1 or 48k. you need to record at the same sampling rate as the dat is. then if it's 48k you need to resample to 44.1 so it can be played on cds

I find that I am currently unable to just transfer the digital music to my hard drive... apparently that's not as easy as it sounds. I have to go analog once, and decided to take the analog signal from the DAT player and import that to my iMac. I have inquiries out on how to do that, but no helpful responses so far. If any of you have any ideas, let me know. Meanwhile, the recordings I've gotten so far sound mint!

ok, I've recorded two copies of the first sk DAT... one was recorded at a lower level than the other... I raised that a little, to exactly 0.0... the other has clipping (some from the original recording, some from recording at a higher level here. The clips are all of just brief peaks of a few milliseconds, and it sounds ok to me... but then my ear sucks :) Of course the clipped version is much louder than the unclipped... which should I use?

actually a car that runs on water is a possibility just not in the very near future. Seems to me that having a tank full of water and having some way to break apart H2O molecules on demand and igniting the hydrogen and oxygen seems like a better idea than driving around with a tank full of hydrogen. Also wouldn't need all that infrastructure to contain/support the delivery of all that hydrogen. Aluminum has such a strong affinity for oxygen that it can split apart water molecules. However a thin coating immediately covers the AL so it can't do this for very long. Researchers at Purdue University have discovered that if the AL is combined with a substance called gallium and others to prevent the skin from forming allowing on-demand conversion of water to Hydrogen and Oxygen. Long ways to go obviously, but looks pretty cool.... http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2008a/080219WoodallAluminum.html

Very very cool of phil to perform those 2 albums, wonder what’s next? This could be the last time for the Warfield, there are new owners. Springsteen did something similar last week, he did a benefit show at the count basie orchestra performing arts center which is in need of serious renovation, the first set he performed the entire darkness on the edge of town album and the 2nd set the entire born to run album. Speaking of The Last Time, maybe the creek should do that song as the final song on Sunday of camp creek, just before we take off on the drive of shame.

Great article in a Popular Mechanics last year from Jay Leno on electric cars. His 100 year old Baker Electric car still with its original batteries gets about 100 miles on a charge. A modern electric still gets about 100 miles on a charge. Not a lot of progress in the last century.

Last night Phil Lesh & Friends opened a five-night run at San Francisco’s famed Warfield Theater. To the surprise of nearly everyone in attendance, Lesh and his friends ran through a complete version of the Grateful Dead’s 1967 self-titled debut during their first set, with Bob Weir joining his estranged bandmate for “Cream Puff War,” ”Morning Dew,” “New Minglewood Blues” and “Viola Lee Blues.” Weir returned at the start of Lesh’s second set as the bassist jumped headfirst into the Dead’s 1968 sophomore effort Anthem of the Sun, which includes classics like “That's It For The Other One” and early rave-ups such as “Alligator.” At the end of the night, Lesh closed his set with the Buddy Holly sing-a-long “Not Fade Away.” With eight sets and eight albums to go, it’s a fair bet that Lesh will run through the Grateful Dead’s entire recorded canon over the next few days. Phil & Friends will return to the Warfield this evening. As of press time, the venue's future is uncertain.

generally, I would agree with Stretchy. My statements were never meant to say there isn't change in the climate, what I am not sure of is if man is responsible for it or not. Regardless if we are or not, there isn't anything in a "green" mentality that I would disagree with - find alternate, more efficient energy sources, stop wasting natural resources, etc. However, some of these "green" initiatives can be way off track. I think Ethanol is joke.

kind of a dual edged sword with oil. the environmentalists dont want us to drill OUR OWN oil which of course is why we demand so much from the middle east. and ..."As you go deeper into debt filling up your tank with $4 gas this weekend, look on the bright side -- you're helping to fund countries that hate you. From Russia to Iran to Venezuela, America's adversaries are splurging on oil windfalls, while programs directed against Uncle Sam and his allies are funded by petroleum revenues"----the rest of an interesting article on OIL is here http://www.nypost.com/seven/05112008/postopinion/opedcolumnists/over_a_barrel_110289.htm?page=0

and now for something completely different. Do we have more natural disasters than before? not sure, but it seems like it. myself, I see a direct correlation between human disasters ( wars, suicide bombers, massive political unrest, genocide, dictators, etc., etc., ad nauseam), and the natural disasters. I believe one causes the other.

well, I don't know what's going on, but I know what I see. I see glaciers melting at an unprecedented rate, some are nearly gone. I see millions of acres of trees being removed, and being burned for fuel. I see pollution on a global scale, both chemical and plastic. I see coral reefs becoming extinct because of warmer waters. I see overfishing of most species. I see our enormous appetite for fossil fuels shaping world politics, and not for the better. I see our most precious resource, fresh water, running in short supply. I see the last nine out of 10 summers being the hottest on record. I see most of us not caring. That's what I see. If you don't think any of this affects us on a global scale, well, I have no idea what you think. what I do think is that we could be doing a much better job in all of these areas, not only because it makes common sense, but because it is right. Soap box off.

CO2 is one of dozens of greenhouse emissions contributing..N2O, methane, etc..burning fossil fuels, deforestation (human activity) raise CO2 levels..water vapor is a big contributor, however GHG's stay in the atmosphere much longer..in turn causing warming, bringing more vapor..its a vicious cycle..if you or anyone for that matter can disprove the scientific consensus that CO2 and other GHG's aren't the cause of our VERY REAL global warming climate change CRISIS..by all means go get your facts published and you'll be bigger than Louis Pasteur..sliced bread even..I'd make it snappy though

Global temperatures drive Co2 levels. Not the other way around....and with a lag time of about 800 years. The number one greenhouse gas? Water vapor!! To the tune of 95%. Man can do nothing to change that. Co2 as a percentage of overall atmospheric composition? 0.036%!! That's significantly less than 1/2 of 1 percent. Mankind contributes 3.225% to the overall Co2 levels in the atmosphere today. That's 3.225% of 0.0036%. We got environmental problems of our own making folks. But man made Co2 emmissions as they relate (or fail to relate) to global warming isn't one of them. Bummer because it gets all the attention and takes research and resources away from more pressing environmental problems. Kind of like drugs. We've got a huge drug problem in this country....but it aint weed that's the biggest issue. However it gets attention and is a headline grabber because it's the first one that most kids try first. Eh...probably a weak analogy. But the numbers are solid. Confirm them with NOAA or any science university site.

I told my long-haired hippie friend Jesse that Scott was playing in a trio and he said: "What's it called? Murawski Martin & Wood?" Haha! This whole climate thing is tough. National Geographic has an article this month about poison ivy becoming more potent because of the high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmospehere. Certain trees are dying because of that too. The Earth has always changed, we've contributed a bit. Wanna know how much Nitrogen runs off from lawn fertilizers every year? It's staggering. We're upsetting the balance, killing stuff. If you want a sweet lawn, overseed and aerate it. There are no weeds in healthy lawns. And plant native species of shrubs and trees, to your area. The news rocks! I'm axiously awaiting the return of Heroes. Yeah, it's the same shit that has been happening for years and years and years, we're more cognizant of it and more a part of it. Plant a tree, a native species. peace!

Bosco, Rochguy, I'm not a scientist, but it sure seems like the vast majority of climate experts believe the climate is changing and that more and more severe storms will be a likely effect. I would have to guess they have systems for measurement and models for analyzing and evaluating climate change. Of course, media coverage adds to public perception of imminent crisis. When the scientific community as a whole predicts catastrophic climate change in the near future, though, I tend to take it pretty seriously.

if you flipped a coin 100,000 times -the results would be close to 50% heads and 50% tails. However, if you examined any 10 or 20 flip sequence within that 100,000 you would see some runs of 5,6, 10, 12 heads or tails in a row. So to examine ANY short run period in natural disasters or ANY event and assume something is out of whack is silly. Anything can happen in the short run... you could go to Vegas and win thousands at blackjack, but in the long run the odds straighten themselves out and the casino wins. Some data other than observation would have to be provided and proved for anything else to be considered.

Boris....I don't "blame" the media. I "credit" them. Seriously though. How do you compare the frequency of natural disasters causing loss of life today to those of 100 years ago or more? The frequency and severity couldn't possibly be accurately measured by today's standards. The sky isn't falling. And if it is...I don't believe we caused it and I don't believe we can do anything about it. Except hold your hits longer maybe.

well if us humans are at fault for the extreme natural disasters then we best start heating up the earth because the earth has been cooling the last 10 years.....going green is cool but dont be a fool!

DARWIN, Australia (AP) -- An Australian driver who secured a carton of beer in his car with a seat belt but left a 5-year-old child unrestrained was fined 750 Australian dollars ($710), police said Tuesday. Constable Wayne Burnett said he was "shocked and appalled" when he pulled over the unregistered car on Friday in the central Australian town of Alice Springs. The 30-can carton was strapped in between the two adults sitting in the back seat of the car. The child was also in back, on the vehicle's floor. "The child was sitting in the lump in the center, unrestrained," Burnett told reporters Tuesday. "I haven't ever seen something like this before," he said. "This is the first time that the beer has taken priority over a child."

It's absolutely TRUE that HUMANS are to blame for the number of storms as well as the severity of those storms as of late. Well...actually not ALL humans, just one person actually. He's about 3'6" tall and has a diabolical weather machine that he programs these storms into, and all the while he's rubbing his hands together laughing a sinister laugh. He also farts CO2 at an astronomical rate. No wait...that's the president I'm thinking of!! My bad.

I agree with Mote.....I believe that what's really changed is the high speed at which news travels globally. IMO there's probably no more natural disasters than there were 100 years ago. They just are reported so quickly. And with so many 24 hour news outlets on-line and on TV, competition encourages sensationalization of stories of mediocre importance and inflates them. And then truly newsworthy stories like Burma and China get way more attention than they could have a generation or two ago.

I’m Back! The Thurs night Phil show was an “A” show. 1st set was 68 minutes and the 2nd set was 104 minutes. I especially liked the Doin That Rag sung by Molitz and a great, ripping version of Chest Fever (The Band) by Larry Campbell. Scar……Fire was a nice way to end the 1st set, it was a short one, only 20 minutes (being just somewhat sarcastic). A nice Trkn opened the 2nd set then a jackie tune then a really nice eyes of the world followed by just 1 verse of the 11 into a Other One Jam into a killer Caution (the highlight of the show!) with Jackie on vocals and doing Pigpen very proud with some very over the top vocals/stories, then into the other one, a nice Loser into a very crisp help/slip/frank to close the set. Cold rain & snow made for a nice encore. The 2nd night was at least a ½ hour shorter overall, and not as good, although it certainly had it’s moments. I’m still on the fence as to a grade, B or B+, but I give them credit for trying different tunes, and mining the weir cannon of GD tunes like never before. After a nice opening jam brown eyed women was quite lovely, then a first ever mama tried with the kid on lead vocals, it was just okay, but I can see that one in the future with larry playing wither fiddle or mando on it, that would be nice, alligator was certainly a surprise, but phil seemed to lack the vocal chops that night to pull off a really good version of it, same with the birdsong, which I think would be better sung by Jackie, the set ended strongly with Jackie doing a magnificent High Time, not sure if they’ve ever done that one before, and that was followed by a hot casey jones. The 2nd set seemed a little disjoined to me, a nice feel like a stranger (another first ever) opened the set followed by okay versions of sitting on top of the world and another Jackie tune, playing in the band was good and the dark star……..new potato caboose………dark star……..golden road……….ujb was excellent and following that was a pretty good sugar mag. I was quite shocked that the encore was direwolf, not an encore type tune, I expected them to follow up with another since the show the night before ended at 11:36 and it was just 11:09 when direwolf ended. Saturday night I saw a nice show with jw, a co-bill of hot tuna and little feat, tuna opened (electric) and played 88 minutes and little feat played 1:44, they played a nice set list with almost all songs from the late great Lowell George era. My problem with little feat is they consider themselves a jam band now, something the real little feat never were, they stretched out the songs way to long and could have easily played another 3 – 4 songs in the 1:44 if they didn’t try to stretch them out for so long. Let the words be yours, I’m done with mine!

For all the bluegrass lovers out there. I have been working on this all week. http://www.shnflac.net/details.php?id=88ca86810700cca68e2e4a26fdfdd8c4a0c434c1 It's Merlefest 4-24-27,2008. This is pt. 1 of the 4th day. It is a sweet sounding Radio Broadcast. The first Day I fit onto 5 discs, the second day I put on 10 discs, the third day goes on 12 discs and I am guessing that the fourth day will be 5 or 6 discs also. Aside from Donna the Buffalo everything here has been stellar, there are some Superjam type things, Some cool sit in's and alot of bands I never heard but really enjoyed...like Bearfoot (from Alaska) and Blue Highway, who could possibly be my new favorite bluegrass band. Just thought I would share.

His albums were never re-issued, because his bitchy daughters kept fighting over $$$, but I'm getting a good transcription of this reel-to-reel version of his "Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians in Hi-Fi" (stereo version), and will turn it into a cd. Well, the reel-to-reel tape recorder I got recently works fine (I'm currently transcribing an old tape of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir/Ohiladelphia Orchestra that was never re-released on cd), so if any of you have old reel-to-reel tapes of Creek, I can now transcribe them for you. One of the tapes I recently bought on ebay had real bad print-through, and was unuseable, so if you think these tapes will last forever, forget it! Get it done now, or they may be lost forever.

Dave Matthews at Darien Lake, mid 90s, bored to tears. Never would of gone but a free ticket was passed on to me and some good friends to go with, but the music sucked and all I could see was white baseball caps turned backwards. Pass!

I always recommend the Radisson. It is not the closest to the show, but it is reasonably priced and they have a 24 hour shuttle that will bring you to the show and pick you up whenever you call. It works for me.

can't remember going to a show with my parents but my daughter's first show was lollapalooza '94 on the runway and north kingstown (i think), second was NKOTB at the civic center in provy....duran duran in woosta '84 was f*king awesome!! ..and i was a little disappointed at neil young at the chevy theatre this past winter, but i couldn't say i wasted my time, per say. ...and to the guy looking for a hotel near the living room..try the marriott or the biltmore, both pricey but as close as you're gonna get to the club.

The Gathering of the Vibes has expanded its roster of performers with some familiar names. Mike Gordon, fresh off his appearance at the Jammys (where Vibes founder Ken Hays presented the Grahamy Jammy) will bring his latest touring band to the festival. In addition, Bill Kreutzmann's new trio, featuring Scott Murawski and Oteil Burbridge will make an appearance. While the daily schedules have not yet been announced, it is entire possible that Gordon will sit in with the Grateful Dead drummer's group, which evolved out a performance earlier this year in Costa Rica by Gordon, Murawski and Kreutzmann.

The worst concerts I ever saw were Dead shows at the Oakland Coliseum. The first night of the 1991 New Years Eve run and the first night of the 1993 Mardi Gras run. Wonderful as they could be, the Grateful Dead were capable of sucking ass on an epic scale.
